Chhattisgarh: Villagers protest ethanol plant construction
Raipur: In the Bhainsa region of Bemetara district, men from Patharra village marked the 21st day of protests against an ethanol plant by shaving their heads in a peaceful demonstration, reported Times of India.
Villagers claim the plant will harm agriculture and pollute local water bodies.
Pramil Tiwari, a retired lecturer and protester, told TOI that over 50 villagers shaved their heads to show their strong opposition. On Saturday, Lala Bharti, District President of the All India Chhattisgarhi Mahasabha, visited the village to support the protest.
As per the media report, protesters worry about securing enough paddy for the plants and complain about foul odours from the facility. Despite officials promising pollution controls, with 90% of construction complete, production at the Patharra plant is expected to begin by November. Authorities say new technology will reduce odour and recycle water.
Three ethanol plants and a sponge iron facility have already been constructed in the Bemetara district. The Patharra ethanol plant is expected to start production as early as November.
Government authorities have assured the community that the technology being used in the Patharra ethanol plant aims to minimise odour and pollution. A specialized digester system will treat waste and recycle water, reducing the plant’s environmental impact. However, the villagers remain sceptical and continue their protest.
Protesters are concerned about where enough paddy will come from to support these plants and are raising concerns and fears about the potential for water and air pollution due to the plants.
Villagers in the nearby regions have also complained of the foul odor that emanates from the plant.
"Furthermore, the waste discharged into water bodies is contributing to pollution. Although the collector and other officials claim that steps are being taken to reduce odor and pollution, I personally invite them to visit the area and see firsthand the impact that nearby residents are suffering," added Tiwari.
